Immaculate Conception Shrine

This is a picture of one of the small altars inside of the main church.  This church was totally HUGE!

This is a picture of the main altar on the floor of the large church.  During the time we were there, we were able to hear the choir sing and watch part of a divinity mass.  It was so awesome.  Even the knights of Columbus were there in full dress.

This is another of the many altars that adorn both sides of the great church.

This is a statue that stands inside of the Crypt on the basement floor.  This is the statue of Sister Cabrini.

This is one of the buildings of the The Catholic University of America.  This university is located right beside the shrine.

This is another of the main buildings that make up the Catholic University of America.

Here is a picture of the University sign and the dorm buildings behind it.

This is a picture of the outside of the shrine.  It is the fourth largest church in the world and the largest church in the NorthEast. The church was truly magnificent!

This is a picture taken within the crypt.  Here you find names on all the walls and pillars signifying all those deceased members whose families donated money to the church to have their loved ones remembered here for ever.  There must have been thousands of names inscribed on the walls in the crypt.

Here are some more names that were inscribed on the walls of the crypt.

This picture was taken of  a mass that was being held in the crypt chapel.  This was only one of over a dozen chapels that were all over the church.

This dark and eerie picture is of Jesus.  It is a huge mosaic that stands at the very rear of the church.  When you stand under this mosaic you feel so humbled, its as if Jesus himself was looking down on you from heaven.  The feeling we got when we were in this section of the church was just plain indescribable.

This is a picture of the main altar on the main floor of the church.  Notice all of the fresh flowers?  If you look close, you can see the priest up on the lectern giving a sermon.

This is another of the many altars inside the nooks of the main floor of the church.

This small chapel was incredible.  As you walk in on both sides is a tiled mosaic of people looking towards the center wall holding candles and praying on their knees. On the center wall was a huge tiled mosaic of Mary and an alter at her feet.  This chapel was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.  It must have taken many months to layout all the tiles for this giant mosaic.

This is a picture of the divine mercy mass that was going on before we left the main floor and went downstairs to the crypt.

This is a picture of me and Tommy standing underneath that giant mosaic of Jesus.  There were a series of small altars at the lords feet on all 3 sides of this section of the church.

This is another small altar inside the church.

This was the small chapel where we had Sunday mass.  It was so great.  There were only 10 people total at the mass so it was like getting a personal mass all to our selves.  When the pastor broke the Eucharist, he broke it for all of us at the mass, we also drank from his cup of wine.  It was very beautiful and something I don't think I will ever forget.

This painting on the wall of the church nearly took my breath away.  It must stand at least 10 feet tall and is truly beautiful.  I believe it is a painting of the Immaculate Conception.

Another of the many altars in the church.  There was gold and marble everywhere.

This is a picture of the hat and cloak of one of our earlier Popes. I believe it was Pope Pias.

This is another picture of the outside of the shrine.  The dome on the top of church was breathtaking as it sparkled from the warm sunshine that afternoon.

This is another picture taken outside of the church.

This picture gives an idea of just how big this church is.  This was the main entrance to the church.  In the very basement was a small gift shop and even a cafeteria.

Another picture of the main entrance of the church.

This chandelier and statue stood just off to the right as you entered the main entrance.

Another altar inside the main church.

this was the altar of one of the various chapels inside of the church.

Another chapel in one of the alcoves of the main church.

The main room of the crypt floor.  This is where the great Pope Pias is buried

these were some of the trios of altars that were at the feet of the huge Jesus mosaic.

this is a picture of Tina and Tommy standing under the main altar.

This is a picture of one of the walls of the church and shows some of the grand paintings and mosaics that were on display all around us.
